Four people, including a child, were killed after a perimeter wall collapsed onto two residential houses in Bweyogerere, Wakiso District, during heavy rainfall on Tuesday morning.
The incident happened at about 6am in Butto Zone, Bweyogerere Division, Kira Municipality, as heavy rain pounded parts of the country.
Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said the wall belonged to Delux Company and collapsed onto the two neighbouring houses, killing the occupants inside.
“Preliminary information indicates that heavy rainfall and flowing water from the premises of Delux Company exerted pressure on the company’s perimeter wall, causing it to collapse onto two nearby residential houses. The four occupants were reportedly killed instantly,” Owoyesigyire said.
The deceased were identified as David Okoth, 25, Angella Inebe, 28, Lucy Alaba, 28, and Alaba’s child. The four were occupants of the two houses.
The landlord, Francis Ssenyoga, was injured in the incident and taken to a health facility for treatment.
Police responded to the scene, recorded statements from witnesses and transported the four bodies to the KCCA City Mortuary at Mulago for post-mortem examinations.
Owoyesigyire said preliminary findings show that Delux Company had recently acquired the factory and was carrying out renovation works, including grading the compound.
Investigators are examining whether the renovation works and drainage arrangements contributed to the accumulation and flow of water that preceded the wall’s collapse.
Police have urged property owners, developers and construction companies to ensure that buildings and perimeter walls are structurally sound and that adequate drainage systems are in place, particularly during heavy rains.
“Developers are urged to assess the potential impact of construction and renovation works on neighbouring properties and take the necessary precautions to protect lives and property,” Owoyesigyire said.
