Uganda’s long-distance runner, Joshua Cheptegei, will attempt to break his own 5000m world record today at the Prefontaine Classic in Oregon, USA. Oregon will host the World Championships from July 15–24.

Cheptegei holds the current 5000m world record with a time of 12:35:36, which he set on August 14, 2020, in Monaco. He chipped 1.99 seconds off Kenenisa Bekele’s previous mark of 12:37.35, set in May 2004.

The 5000m and 10000m world record holder will again be eyeing another historic moment at Hayward Field.
