2023 World Athletics Championships: Chemutai, Nakaayi among Ugandan athletes in action today

•Halima Nakaayi – Women’s 800m Heats (11:05am)
•Tarsis Orogot – Men’s 200m Heats (1:15pm)
•Sarah Chelangat & Prisca Chesang – Women’s 5000m heats (8:02pm)
•Peruth Chemutai – Women’s 3000m SC Heats (8:53pm)

Five Ugandan athletes will be taking on the field today at the ongoing 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

The action-packed day begins with Halima Nakaayi, who clinched the Women’s 800m Gold in the 2019 Doha Championships. Nakaayi will participate in heat four, where the top three from each heat, along with the three fastest from across all heats, secure their spots in the semifinals.

Peruth Chemutai, renowned for her remarkable gold-winning performance in the 3000m Steeplechase at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, will compete in Heat 2, aiming to secure one of the first five automatic qualification spots.

Tarsis Orogot, an electrifying emerging talent, will grace Heat Five of the Men’s 200m, as he endeavours to secure a spot among the top three, thereby advancing to the semifinals.

Meanwhile, Sarah Chelangat and Prisca Chesang will embark on their quests in Heat One and Heat Two, respectively, of the Women’s 5000m. This event boasts the presence of remarkable athletes such as Sifan Hassan, Faith Kipyegon, Beatrice Chebet, Margaret Kipkemboi, and Gudaf Tsegay. The top eight athletes from each of the two heats will earn coveted positions in the final showdown.

Uganda only has one medal at the ongoing competition, thanks to Joshua Cheptegei’s gold in the 10,000m.
