Former Uganda Cranes captain Denis Onyango turns 40 today, just hours after his club, Mamelodi Sundowns, secured its eighth consecutive Premier Soccer League title with a 3-0 victory over Chippa United last evening.

The win further cements Onyango’s legacy as the most decorated player in South African Premier League history, now boasting 12 league titles in the country.

While the Ugandan goalkeeper currently serves as backup to Ronwen Williams, he has featured in a dozen matches this season, keeping eight clean sheets—a testament to his enduring class and consistency.

Onyango’s contract is set to expire at the end of June, and key decisions about his future remain pending.

According to reports from South Africa, the veteran shot-stopper will meet with the club’s management after the CAF Champions League final against Egypt’s Pyramids FC to discuss his contract situation.

The two-legged final will see Sundowns host the first leg on May 24, with the return leg set for June 1 in Egypt.

Having been with Sundowns since July 2011, Onyango will then head to the FIFA Club World Cup, likely with clarity on his next steps at the club.

In addition to his league titles, Onyango’s impressive trophy cabinet includes the CAF Champions League, CAF Super Cup, African Football League, Nedbank Cup (three times), Telkom Knockout (twice), and the MTN8, bringing his total silverware tally to 20 major titles.
