The IUEA sports ground in Kansanga, Kampala, came alive on Sunday, September 28, as the SMACK League, powered by Guinness, kicked off its eighth season.

The much-anticipated return, after a seven-month off-season, was marked by competitive football, entertainment, and the Guinness Matchday experience.

On the field, defending champions Alks were held to a goalless draw by Blockowners, while debutants Spartans put up a spirited fight but fell 2-1 to Pirates.

The Mighty Zimbaz started strong with a 4-1 win over Devils, with Gerald Kawooya bagging a hat-trick. Gladiators also picked up three points after a 2-0 victory against Knights, thanks to goals from Emma Masawi.

Phantomz edged Zuluz 2-1 in a physical contest, with Mark Muhindo and Crispus Kato scoring before Steven pulled one back for the latter.

Elsewhere, Elite saw off Outkasts 2-0 with a double from Maxwell Batte, while Cyclones staged a comeback to beat Vikings 3-2 in a dramatic five-goal thriller.

Other games also had plenty of goals, thanks to the new pooling system that puts alumni teams with classes close to each other in the same group.

Off the pitch, the atmosphere was electric. Janzi Band serenaded the crowd with old-school renditions of local and international hits, while DJ LB kept the energy high with classic hip-hop and RnB mixes.

Football fans didn’t have to rush home or to the nearby bars for Premier League action. Guinness Matchday brought the beautiful game to them, with matches shown on big screens for everyone to enjoy on a chilly Sunday.

Arsenal fans had the most to celebrate after their team’s 2-1 comeback win over Newcastle. Earlier in the day, Aston Villa came from behind to beat Fulham 3-1 after cancelling out the latter’s early opener.

David Kawooya, Chief Marketing Officer of the SMACK League, described the opening day of the season as a true reflection of the league’s spirit.

“What makes the SMACK League unique is the balance of competitive football and pure entertainment. Season Eight has started on a high, and with Guinness backing us, fans can expect even more excitement every matchday,” he said.

Mercy Atwongyeire, Project Manager for Premium Beer at Uganda Breweries Limited, said Guinness is proud to fuel the energy around the league.

“The SMACK League is more than just football; it’s a celebration of friendship, passion, and community. Guinness is here to make those moments even more memorable, both on and off the pitch,” she noted.

The SMACK League will continue to be played bi-weekly, with more football, music, and community moments expected as the season unfolds.
