Uganda’s long-distance sensation Jacob Kiplimo has confirmed he is stepping away from track and field events to fully focus on marathon running — marking a new chapter in his already illustrious career.

Fresh off his stunning victory at the 2025 Bank of America Chicago Marathon, where he clocked 2:02:23, the seventh-fastest time in history, the 24-year-old said his days on the track are over.

“I will not go back to the track and field races. I will only return to defend my World Cross Country title,” Kiplimo revealed in an interview following his Chicago win.

Kiplimo, who also finished second in his marathon debut at the 2025 London Marathon, said he is not chasing records just yet, but rather focusing on mastering the 42-kilometre distance.

“I don’t talk about breaking world records because anything is possible in athletics if you prepare well. I am still learning several things about marathon running, and everything is moving step by step,” he explained.

Widely regarded as one of Uganda’s greatest athletes, Kiplimo holds the world half marathon record and has consistently dominated both cross-country and track events. His transition to the marathon signals a new era in his athletic journey — one many believe will see him among the all-time greats of road racing.

On his return to Uganda, Kiplimo received a hero’s welcome at Entebbe International Airport, where fans, officials, and fellow athletes gathered to celebrate his Chicago triumph.
