Elijah Luutu and Cathie Pavie on Friday, 21 August 2026, emerged leaders in the men’s and ladies’ categories respectively after the opening round of the Johnnie Walker Uganda Seniors Open at Uganda Golf Club in Kampala.
Luutu carded a level par 72 on the par 72 course to establish a commanding five stroke lead at the top of the men’s leaderboard.
The Ugandan golfer’s round was built around three birdies, which came on holes 6, 13 and 17. He kept his card under control for much of the day, dropping shots on only two holes.
With five strokes separating him from the chasing pack, Luutu will start Saturday’s final round as the clear favourite to claim the men’s title.
Kenya’s Gurbux Singh sits in second position after returning 5 over par. His performance leaves him one stroke ahead of Uganda’s Hassan Pirani.
Joseph Bagabo is fourth on 8 over par, while William Otieno and Michael Cleave are tied for fifth after carding nine over par.
For defending men’s champion Dave Plenderleith, the opening round provided a difficult start to his title defence. Plenderleith returned a 10 over par score and has considerable ground to make up if he is to remain in contention for another championship.
The women’s category produced a similarly intriguing battle, with defending champion Cathie Pavie taking the early advantage.

Pavie carded an 85 to finish three strokes clear at the top of the women’s leaderboard. Her round included a birdie on the fourth hole, helping her establish an early cushion over the chasing field.
Rose Azuba is second on 88, while Grace Kabonero occupies third position after shooting 91. Jenina Nasimolo is fourth on 92, leaving the leading players within striking distance as they head into the final round.
The opening round attracted 82 golfers, with 71 men and 11 ladies taking to the course. The field was made up largely of players from the host Uganda Golf Club, alongside competitors from the wider region.
Saturday’s final round is expected to attract even greater attention, with the subsidiary competitions joining the championship action.
The Johnnie Walker Uganda Seniors Open will conclude with an Afro-themed 19th Hole experience on Saturday, featuring live entertainment from songstress Winnie Nwagi and other acts.
