Nathan Asiimwe made an impressive debut for Uganda on Thursday, setting up the equaliser as the Cranes drew 1-1 with Tunisia in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.
The 21-year-old right-back produced a pinpoint assist on his international debut, helping Uganda secure a valuable point against the North Africans.
Asiimwe, who plays for Salford City on loan from Charlton Athletic, looked comfortable in his first appearance for the Cranes and showed why he has attracted attention in English football.
Born in England to Ugandan parents, Asiimwe was eligible to represent both Uganda and England. His appearance against Tunisia, however, marked the beginning of his international career with Uganda.
The versatile defender can operate in all four defensive positions, giving Uganda another option across the back line.
Asiimwe joined Charlton Athletic’s academy in 2019 at the age of 12 and progressed through the club’s youth system.
He enjoyed a successful 2022/23 season, helping Charlton’s Under-18 side win the Professional Development League 2 – South title before also featuring in the Under-21 team that won the 2023 London Senior Cup.
His progress earned him his first professional contract with Charlton in July 2023, with the deal including an option for an additional year.
Asiimwe had already made an early impression at senior level before signing his professional contract. He made his first-team debut against Plymouth Argyle in the EFL Trophy in November 2022 and provided an assist for fellow academy graduate Karoy Anderson.
He has continued his development through loan moves and joined Salford City on a season-long loan on 1 September 2026.
His impressive start to life with the Cranes now gives Uganda another promising young defender as the team begins its campaign to qualify for the 2027 AFCON tournament.
