The construction of Akii-Bua Stadium in Lira City has reached 78 per cent completion, with contractors expecting to hand over the facility on 15 November 2026.
The progress was highlighted during a visit by Parliament’s Committee on Education and Sports, which inspected the stadium as part of its tour of Uganda’s sports infrastructure.
The project is being constructed by Egyptian company SAMCO National Construction Company in partnership with Khater Sports, with the total investment reported at about US$129 million.
Akii-Bua Stadium is being developed as a multi-purpose sports complex designed to accommodate football, athletics and several other sporting activities.
At the centre of the complex is a 20,000-seater stadium with a football pitch and an athletics track.
The facility will also have an outdoor training pitch with its own running track, two five-a-side artificial turf pitches with changing rooms, a clubhouse and a 60-bed hostel for athletes.
Other facilities include an indoor arena, a swimming pool and extensive parking space.
Once completed, the complex is expected to provide space not only for major sporting events but also for training, accommodation, recreation and commercial activities.
The development could also create new opportunities for Lira City by attracting sporting events, training camps and visitors while supporting businesses around the facility.
The stadium is named after Uganda’s legendary athlete John Akii-Bua, who made history at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games by winning gold in the 400-metre hurdles and setting a world record.
