The social media frenzy that was expected during today’s Presidential elections has been nipped in the bud by security as telecom companies have been asked to switch off access to social media platforms like Whatsapp, Twitter and Facebook.

Sources tell us that Uganda Communications Commission took this decision for security purposes as a “protective measure” to prevent individuals who would probably sue social media to incite violence.

Mobile Money has also been switched off.

“Y’ello customer. There is a temporary interface with the Mobile Money service. Our team is working to restore service as soon as possible,” Reads a response when one tries to access MTN’s mobile money service.

Apparently, mobile money has been switched off to avert voter bribery.
