The Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) has announced a crackdown on accommodation facilities operating without tourism licenses. Beginning November 18, any unlicensed facility will face closure under the regulations set by the Uganda Tourism Act, which mandates that all accommodation establishments must be licensed by UTB to operate legally.

The scope of this crackdown will affect a wide range of accommodation types, including hotels, lodges, guest houses, motels, inns, serviced apartments, cottages, villas, hostels, tented camps, and farmhouses. UTB’s goal is to ensure that all facilities meet the necessary standards to provide quality services to visitors.

“It’s essential that we uphold the highest standards to guarantee that tourists experience the best of Uganda’s hospitality,” UTB stated in a letter to accommodation owners and managers.

This move aligns with UTB’s broader effort to enhance quality assurance across the country’s tourism industry, which includes a nationwide program for grading, classification, and registration of accommodation facilities.

Implications for Business Owners

The upcoming crackdown could have serious consequences for accommodation business owners who are not in compliance. Unlicensed establishments risk immediate closure, which could result in significant financial losses and harm their reputation. UTB is urging all business owners to ensure their facilities are fully registered and licensed to avoid these consequences.

The licensing process requires the submission of relevant documentation, payment of fees, and inspections to confirm compliance with tourism regulations. UTB has provided contact details for owners who need assistance with registration.

Benefits of Licensing

There are numerous advantages for accommodation businesses that obtain a tourism operating license. A license boosts the facility’s credibility and reputation, making it more appealing to tourists. Licensed businesses are also more likely to be featured in UTB’s promotional materials and online platforms, which can increase visibility and attract more guests.

Additionally, licensed facilities can benefit from UTB’s support services, including training programs, marketing assistance, and networking opportunities that can help grow their business and maintain high standards within the industry.
