Two retired Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) generals who previously headed military intelligence have been arrested as investigations into allegations of false intelligence and treachery widen.
The officers are retired Maj Gen Abel Kandiho and retired Brig Gen Charles Bakahumura, both former heads of the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), now known as Defence Intelligence and Security (DIS).
According to military sources, the two were arrested on Tuesday morning, less than three weeks after they officially retired from active service.
They were among 19 generals retired by the UPDF on 20 August 2026.
Kandiho headed CMI from January 2017, when he was still a Colonel. He was promoted to Brigadier in November of the same year while serving as CMI chief and was later promoted to Major General.
Bakahumura led CMI from 2012 to 2017 before moving to the position of Chief of Logistics and Engineering. He served in that role for seven years, making him the longest-serving officer to head the directorate.
The arrests are reportedly connected to an investigation said to have been sanctioned by Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
A military source familiar with the investigation said other people linked to the same case are also being sought.
The latest arrests come amid a wider investigation into allegations that intelligence officers produced false reports.
Several senior DIS officers have already been arrested in connection with the probe, including former DIS chief Maj Gen James Birungi, Director of Counter-Terrorism Col Peter Ahimbisibwe and Director of Special Operations Lt Col Ephraim Byaruhanga.
Birungi and Byaruhanga have since been charged with treachery before the General Court Martial and remanded to Makindye Military Police Barracks.
Birungi was arrested after appearing before a board chaired by Deputy Chief of Defence Forces Lt Gen Samuel Okiding, which was established on the orders of Gen Kainerugaba.
