While smartphones have become a daily necessity around the world, in Uganda more than half the population still lives without one. Out of nearly 50 million people, only about 18.2 million have access to a smartphone.

To close this gap, Watu Simu, the smartphone financing arm of Watu, has partnered with Samsung, a global technology leader, to make smartphones more accessible and affordable. Together, they have already enabled more than 500,000 Ugandans to own a smartphone, opening the door to work, education, and digital connectivity.

The initiative combines Samsung’s world-class devices with Watu Simu’s flexible, low-cost financing model, ensuring that no region of Uganda is left behind in the digital revolution. Watu’s approach has already transformed lives in Kenya and other African countries, where millions now rely on smartphones for business, banking, and communication.

In Uganda, the partnership is rapidly expanding nationwide, with hundreds of thousands already benefiting. Recent findings from a GeoPoll survey underline its impact:

54% of Watu customers reported higher incomes

21% secured new jobs

86% access mobile banking weekly

For entrepreneurs, this access is proving life-changing. Zubedah Nabankema, a juice vendor in Kampala, now runs her business digitally, reaching more customers and increasing her savings. Similarly, Suzanne Masimbwa, a food vendor, used a Watu Simu loan in 2024 to buy her first smartphone. She now markets her produce on WhatsApp, accepts payments via mobile money, and manages deliveries more efficiently. The shift has boosted her earnings, strengthened financial security, and helped her grow her business sustainably while comfortably repaying her loan.

Commenting on the partnership, Moses Kutesta Buye, Country Manager for Uganda, Samsung Electronics East Africa, said:

“Samsung is committed to driving digital inclusion across Africa. Through this partnership with Watu Simu, we are ensuring that more Ugandans can access innovative technology that enhances their daily lives and creates growth opportunities.”

Mykyta Batenko, Head of Watu Simu in Uganda, added:

“At Watu, our mission is to unlock financial access and empower communities. Reaching over 500,000 clients in Uganda is just the beginning; we are committed to scaling further so that millions more, including those in underserved regions, can benefit from affordable smartphones and the opportunities they create.”

This partnership goes beyond devices. It is about unlocking income, jobs, and digital inclusion for millions of Ugandans — paving the way for a more connected and empowered future.
