The prestigious Webb Ellis Cup, the ultimate symbol of global rugby supremacy, arrived in Uganda on Monday ahead of the ongoing 2025 Rugby Africa Cup—a tournament that doubles as the continent’s qualification pathway for the Men’s Rugby World Cup Australia 2027.

In its historic first visit to Uganda, the iconic trophy is making rounds across key venues, with Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort standing out as one of the few elite facilities to host the revered silverware.

“We are privileged to host the iconic Webb Ellis Trophy—a distinguished symbol of rugby’s highest honour. Gracing the occasion was Rugby Africa President, Mr Herbert Mensah, marking a proud moment for the sport on the continent,” read a statement from the resort.

The 2025 Rugby Africa Cup is being staged at Mandela National Stadium and runs from 8–19 July, drawing attention from across the continent as nations battle for a spot at the 2027 World Cup.

As part of the trophy’s tour, the Rugby Africa delegation, led by President Herbert Mensah, also presented the Webb Ellis Cup to President Yoweri Museveni at State House. The President lauded rugby for promoting discipline, teamwork, and national cohesion.

“Rugby is vigorous and excellent for fitness, but more importantly, it builds teamwork. You cannot succeed on individual brilliance alone. That is the spirit our country needs—unity and shared purpose,” Museveni posted on his official X account.
