A Ugandan nurse has won plaudits after making a treacherous climb on an improvised wooden staircase to deliver vaccines to children in a remote village in the eastern part of the country.

Agnes Nambozo, a nurse at Buluganya Health Centre III, is seen in the video making the steep climb on her way to vaccinate children in Masheluse village.

The Health Minister, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, hailed her as “nurse of the year.”

“Absolutely speechless and touched to see this dedicated and committed Enrolled Nurse Ms Nambozo Agnes from Buluganya Health Centre III. She is on her way to Masheluse village in Nataba parish, Young Child Clinic outreach to vaccinate children. Nurse of the year!” said Dr. Aceng.

A one @NursingnowU said, “Determined, passionate, dedicated, resilient. Enrolled Nurse Ms. Nambozo Agnes from Health Centre 111 in Eastern Uganda on her way to Young Child Clinic outreach in a hard-to-reach village: Agnes you deserve recognition and sponsorship to advance in your nursing profession.”

@e_muhumuza said that the nurse deserves a hero’s medal.

“Oh! Great nurse Nambozo! She is such one person who deserves a serious medal on Heroes Day, but unfortunately, recognition of her role in society by the authorities is very minimal. You’re a hero, Musawo Agnes.”

Similarly, @ARwakajaraMP tweeted, “Ms. Nambozo Agnes is truly a hero. This is selfless service. I second her nomination for the award of Nurse of the Year as well as some special commendations to motivate more selfless workers like her.”

For years, medical doctors, nurses, and pharmacists, among others, have decried poor working conditions.

According to health workers, the conditions (poor accommodation, poor and delayed pay, heavy workload, and long working hours) are to blame for inefficient service delivery in health facilities, such as the long waiting times for patients, which are always blamed on them.
