Despite the absence of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in Uganda and East Africa as a whole, referee Waiswa Muzamiru showcased his resourcefulness over the weekend by using an improvised VAR system to reverse his own decision.

In the FUFA Big League match between Kataka FC and Black Powers, Muzamiru awarded Kataka FC a penalty in the 86th minute following a possible handball incident.

However, he took an unusual step by rushing to the FUFA TV van to gain a second perspective on the incident. After reviewing the footage, he decided to rescind the penalty.

This unconventional move has sparked reactions from Ugandan football enthusiasts.

@arinaitwsolomon commented, “Interesting. But he made the correct decision.”

@AyesigaAsr stated, “Actually, that’s good. Then they should adapt that to all league matches.”

@Badrumugenyi expressed concern, “In Uganda, we don’t have VAR. If he awarded a penalty, it was supposed to be taken, not cancelled. FUFA cameras are not supposed to be used for refereeing. I advise Kataka FC to appeal the referee’s decision.”

@AriccoDaudi praised FUFA, saying, “Well done FUFA for improvising. Using our little available technology to have fair and balanced officiation.”

@kisoyiro added, “Wonderful way to improvise. This is what we need in the game. He might have set an incredible precedent.”

@JonahSsenfuka applauded the referee’s creativity, saying, “The creativity of this man saved the game.”

In a football world where technology often plays a significant role, Muzamiru’s ingenuity added an unexpected twist to the match and sparked a conversation about the use of technology in Ugandan football.
