What was supposed to be a night of fun turned out fatal as an Australian national lost his life after taking fake drugs in Entebbe last Wednesday.

Police identified the man as 30-year-old Christopher David Kirkman, a miner in DR Congo. He had missed his connecting flight to Australia and decided to sample Entebbe’s night life.

He was found dead in his hotel room.

“The information we have so far gathered is that Kirkman was working in a goldmine in Democratic Republic of Congo. He was on transit from Congo to Australia,” Uganda Police metropolitan spokesman Patrick Onyango said.

He commented on Facebook that he had missed his flight to Australia and was planning a big night in Uganda.

“Well that was an extremely long day, missed the connecting flight so looks like a big night tonight!” he posted on his Facebook wall.

Kirkman was in company of a fellow Australian friend who was hospitalised at Entebbe Hospital and was declared out of danger.

Onyango said that preliminary investigations indicated Kirkman died of a drug overdose as he also suffered from hypertension.

“We have arrested one man who is alleged to have supplied the drugs to the Australians. The one who was taken to hospital is out of danger,” he said.

Onyango added that they are still carrying out investigations.

Kirkman had been working in the Democratic Republic of Congo with Australian gold mining company, Byrnecut, since February 2013 and he was on his way home for his leave.

In 2012, American reality show Amazing Race producer, Jeff Rice was also found dead in his hotel room after taking fake cocaine.
