Police have shot dead a suspected robber after he allegedly attacked an officer with a panga while fleeing from police following the robbery of a university student in Kampala.

The incident happened at about 7:30pm on 23 October 2026 near the interchange connecting the Northern Bypass and the Entebbe Expressway.

According to police, a female student at Metropolitan International University in Mengo was travelling home on a boda-boda when she was attacked by about four men armed with pangas.

The suspects allegedly stopped her and grabbed her bag, which contained two mobile phones, before fleeing.

The student raised an alarm, attracting police officers who were patrolling the area. The officers responded and pursued the suspects as they escaped into a nearby swamp.

During the chase, one of the suspects allegedly turned on a police officer and attempted to attack him with a panga.

Police shot the suspect, who sustained injuries and later died while being taken to hospital for medical treatment.

Officers recovered a panga, a knife and the student’s bag containing her two mobile phones from the suspect.

The identity of the deceased had not been established by the time of reporting. His body was taken to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination as police continued with investigations into the incident.
