After two months of silence, the government has finally spoken out on the arrest of former police chief, Kale Kayihura.

Without disclosing any details, Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda told Parliament that Kayihura was to be handled according to procedure befitting of a military general.

“As you know, the former IGP is a very senior officer of the UPDF and he is being handled in accordance to the procedures laid down for such officers.”

Kayihura has been in detention in Makindye Military Barracks since June 13 but is yet to appear in any court or be charged with any crimes.

Rugunda’s remarks suggest that Kayihura will be tried by the General Court Martial but it remains a point of speculation as to when the maverick general will appear in the dock.

Kayihura’s seemingly long detention without trial has elicited anger among sections of Ugandans with some calling for his immediate release while others demand that he be produced in Court.

Some two UCU students, Kisoro residents are among the citizens that have since sued the government protesting the general’s detention saying it is unjust and a violation of his rights.
