Catholic Church wants tithe taken off salary as tax, says believers no longer go to church

The Archbishop of Kampala, Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga has intimated a plan to ask the government to compulsively remove the 1/10 tithe from all believers’ salaries and forward it directly to the church.

According to Lwanga, believers have abandoned their God-given responsibility to tithe a tenth of their earnings which has, in turn, hurt the church’s development plans.

“In developed countries, they do it. If you earn Shs1,000, the church takes of Shs100 like that because people don’t go to church but want to continue supporting its work,” Kizito said.

Ugandans that Matooke Republic has spoken to have expressed anger about the proposal saying that it is another example of how the church is conniving with the government to fleece them of their hard-earned money.

“We already have enough taxes on our back. Now the Church – where we run for solace is also planning to squeeze us the more?” Joseph Mafabi argued.
