The Inspector General of Government (IGG), Irene Mulyagonja, has lined up a 200-man team to probe the wealth of 100 senior Bank of Uganda officials.

According to sources in the IGG’s office, for every BoU official, two investigators have been assigned. The officials under scrutiny include the Governor Tumusiime Mutebile, his deputy Louis Kasekende among others.

In a letter dated October 18, the IGG notified the officials under scrutiny that the investigation was a mere routine exercise under sanctioned by law under the Leadership Code Act to ascertain how and from where public servants accumulate their wealth.

“This is to notify you of the decision by Inspectorate of Government to conduct a verification of your income, assets and liabilities as provided under section 4C of the Leadership Code Act,” the letter partly read.

The Leadership Code Act states that, “a person shall within three months after becoming a leader; and thereafter every two years, during the month of December; submit to the Inspector General a written declaration of the leader’s income, assets and liabilities, the names, income, assets and liabilities of his or her spouse, child, and dependant in the prescribed form, without prejudice to the rights of the leader’s spouse, child and dependant to independently own property.”

According to the IGG’s spokesperson, Munira Ali, the verification has already started.

She added that BoU is not an isolated case as other parastatals such as other top officials such as KCCA, UNRA have also had their assets verified.
