UTL SAGA: Museveni orders Otafiire to get a new UTL boss

Uganda Telecom Limited has been in and out of the media for mostly the wrong reasons like swindling of billions of the telecom’s funds, poor management and the burst ups between Privatisation Minister Evelyn Anite and UTL boss Twebaze Bemanya.

Coincientially, Bemanya’s contract as UTL boss expired recently and its extension has been a matter of discussion between President Museveni, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Kahinda Otafiire, Evelyn Anite and top UTL management.

Otafiire wrote to the President asking for Bemanya’s contract to be renewed, but the President declined on that plea due to the fact that Bemanya has on several occasions clashed with a very active muzukulu Evelyn Anite.

“I have received your letter of November 6, 2019, about the Administrator of Uganda Telecom Limited (UTL), whose time is expiring but you want to renew the contract. Mr Bemanya is always in conflict with Minister Anite. Anite is one of our very active Baijukuru (grandchildren, in the local Runyankore translation),” Museveni replied in a letter addressed to Otafiire.

The letter also goes ahead to order Otafiire to choose an easier option of getting a new UTL administrator to replace Bemanya, because “going on with endless tension is not good management.”

Although the President has declined to renew Bemanya’s contract at UTL, he remains the boss at Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB).
