A Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) soldier attached to the African Union Mission in Somalia has tested positive for COVID-19. According to Brig. Richard Otto, who commands the UPDF contingent in Somalia (AMISOM), the soldier is undergoing treatment at a military hospital in Mogadishu.

It is said that the victim was tested after developing symptoms similar to those of COVID-19.

UPDF Spokesman Brig. Richard Karemire yesterday at Uganda Media Center confirmed the news before he quickly stated that the soldier is in stable condition. Karemire also said UPDF doctors in Somalia have already put some officers under quarantine as tracing of the other contacts of the patient is ongoing. UPDF has over 5000 soldiers’ presence in Somalia.

Karemire said the health authorities in Somalia have put strict regulations in the camps to avoid further spread. Somalia so far has 582 confirmed cases of COVID-19, registered 28 deaths, and 20 recoveries.
