Nearly two weeks ago, Mityana Municipality Member of Parliament Hon. Francis Zaake was arrested by Police for defying President Museveni’s directives of not distributing relief food during the Coronavirus lockdown.

Zaake was in Police custody for over a week until Court ordered for his unconditional release, but the custody was nothing like pleasant for him, as he has since been in hospital battling sickness and wounds that were allegedly inflicted to him by Police officers while in custody.

This morning, Kyadondo East Member of Parliament Hon Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine has given an update from the doctors about Zaake’s condition, and it is a mixture of both good and sad news. The good is that Zaake is steadily recovering, the bad is that he has damage on his sight.

“An ophthalmologist tried to examine Hon. Zaake’s eyes but discovered that he is suffering from a condition known as photophobia (fear of light/pain to the eyes due to light exposure) which has made it almost impossible to open his eyes for examination.” Bobi Wine said in a statement on his social media platforms.

He added that his fellow legislator “still suffers from acute migraines as well as excruciating back pain. Otherwise he is steadily recovering.”

Although opposition figures allege that the Police did this to their colleague, Twiine Mansio Charles, the Public Relations Officer of Criminal Investigations Directorate released a statement on April 24 refuting torture claims.  According to Twiine, Zaake was arrested while ill.
