Parliament suspended after MPs, staff test positive for COVID-19

Parliament of Uganda is halting business for two weeks following a COVID-19 outbreak among lawmakers and staffers. 

Members of Parliament have been advised to keep away from the precincts of Parliament for two weeks effective Monday, June 28 2021.

In a notice released by Clerk to Parliament Waiswa Herny Yoweri, he said the decision to suspend activities was made after speaking with parliament’s leadership.

According to our sources, about 200 legislators and staff members have contracted the coronavirus. Parliament has urged other lawmakers and parliament staffers to get tested for COVID-19.

Yoweri said parliament’s different committees will continue meeting with a few staff present.

Meanwhile, parliament will use the two weeks ‘holiday’ to disinfect the premises.

Uganda has 73,401 cumulative confirmed cases of COVID-19 as722 new cases were reported yesterday. 34 deaths were reported taking the total deaths to 714 while recoveries are now at 50,085.
