National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, has expressed his intention to defy what he perceives as “emotional and illegal directives” issued by the Police.

On Wednesday, the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Maj Gen Geoffrey Katsigazi Tumusiime announced the suspension of mobilization tours by the NUP party. This decision came in response to alleged violations of several guidelines by the party.

“In light of these blatant violations of the guidelines, the activities of the NUP are hereby suspended with immediate effect. This announcement follows our prior communication to the NUP leadership, in which we halted their planned mobilization activities and office openings until they are prepared to comply with the guidelines and the rule of law,” stated the Deputy IGP in an official statement.

Additionally, the police chief accused Bobi Wine of using one of the rallies to “incite violence, promote sectarianism, make illegitimate calls for the removal of an elected government, and issuance of defamatory statements against the President.”

Addressing journalists at the NUP headquarters in Kamwokya this afternoon, Bobi Wine clarified that his party had not sought permission to hold the rallies but had simply notified the police. He argued that the police lacked the authority to make decisions on behalf of registered political parties.

“I want to assure you that we will never obey any illegal and emotional orders,” said Bobi Wine.

The first phase of NUP’s mobilization activities commenced on August 28 and concluded on Wednesday in Arua.
