The Uganda Human Rights Commission Chairperson, Justice Mariam Wangadya, has urged the government to release protesters arrested during today’s anti-corruption march to parliament without charges.

In a brief interview, Wangadya said that if the government cannot release them without any charges, then they should be brought before the courts within the stipulated time.

“I would call for calmness and reasonableness. I hope the arrests were not violent, and those arrested will either be produced in court within the time prescribed by the law or released. Not every person arrested must be taken to court,” Wangadya said.

Meanwhile, the Uganda Law Society (ULS) has assembled a team of lawyers to secure police bonds for protesters arrested during today’s anti-corruption march to parliament.

According to ULS President Bernad Oundo, the lawyers are visiting all police stations in Kampala city and its suburbs where the arrested protesters are being held to offer free legal services.

Throughout the morning and afternoon, several youths were arrested along various streets of Kampala as they attempted to march towards parliament to protest alleged corruption in parliament.
