Chief of Defense Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has stated that he will not be on the ballot in the 2026 presidential elections.

Through his official X (formerly Twitter) account, the First Son said he will instead endorse his father, President Yoweri Museveni, as he will focus on improving the army.

“I would like to announce that I will not be on the ballot in 2026. Almighty God told me to focus on His army first. So, I fully endorse President Yoweri Museveni in the next elections,” he said.

In another tweet, he further warned that Museveni’s successor will come from either the army or the police.

“No civilian will lead Uganda after President Museveni. The security forces will not allow it. The next leader will be a soldier or policeman,” Muhoozi said in a tweet.

He added, “For me, NOTHING on this earth is holier than the UPDF! So, I cannot think of a greater honour than being in the UPDF. It is holy ground!! God bless the holy UPDF and sacred Uganda forever!!!”

His tweets have attracted significant reactions, with many questioning why a serving military officer continues to freely express views about partisan politics, which is against the law for any serving security officer.

Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, reacted, saying, “In a serious country, this would be a treasonous statement, especially coming from someone who commands the country’s defense forces. This errant UPDF officer is the one supposed to be appearing before the General Court Martial.”
