Former Aruu County Member of Parliament and vocal opposition figure Odonga Otto has questioned whether he still belongs to Uganda’s opposition, saying the political landscape is changing.
Otto, who previously subscribed to the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), said he is increasingly questioning what it means to remain in the opposition.
“I doubt I still belong to the opposition. What am I opposing?” Otto said.
While appearing on NBS TV’s Frontline show, Otto said that he had seen more constructive opposition within the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) than in the National Unity Platform (NUP).
“We are seeing more constructive opposition inside PLU than inside NUP,” he said.
When asked about his attendance at the launch of the PLU website on Monday, Otto said he was honoured to have been invited to PLU’s digitalisation of members and expressed hope that he would be invited to similar activities again.
“I was honoured to be invited to the PLU digitalisation of members. I hope they invite me again,” he said.
He explained that he attended the event to understand what was happening within the group and was surprised to see prominent businessmen, including Sudhir Ruparelia and Godfrey Kirumira, at the function.
“I had to go to that function of PLU to see what was going on. I was surprised to see tycoons, Sudhir and Kirumira there. I think the writings on the wall are changing,” Otto said.
However, Otto said attending a PLU event does not mean that he has decided to join the organisation.
“Invitation to attend a meeting is different. I will have to make a decision whether to join PLU or not, and that will not take so long,” he said.
Otto also spoke about the future of Uganda’s political leadership, saying he believes General Muhoozi Kainerugaba could become president in 2031.
“The way I see things, Muhoozi might end up becoming president,” he said.
Otto served in Parliament for about 20 years as the representative of Aruu County. He has, however, lost the seat in the last two electoral cycles to Christopher Komakech.
