A soldier of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), Private Ameny Bonny, aged 32, has been sentenced to death by the 5th Infantry Division Field Court Martial for murdering residents in Paimol, Agago District.

He faced seven charges: three counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, one count of abduction, and one count of being absent without official leave.

The court, chaired by Colonel Peter Musherere, handed down the sentence following a two-day hearing held in Ngora East Village, Paimol Sub-county, Agago District.

On October 20, 2024, Private Ameny deserted his post at Pakondong Detach and went to Ngora East Village to search for his wife, Ogom Betty, whom he suspected of infidelity.

Armed and agitated, he shot and killed three people, injured two others (including a one-year-old child), and abducted Obita Richard at gunpoint to force him to reveal his wife’s and her alleged lover’s location.

During the trial, Ameny pleaded guilty to all charges, citing frustration over his wife’s disappearance with Shs16.5 million, which he had loaned her to start a business.

Prosecutor Lt. Nekemiya Waiswa emphasised the gravity of Ameny’s crimes, describing him as an adult of sound mind who committed devastating, premeditated acts.

Defence counsel Pte. Agaba Darius argued for leniency, highlighting Ameny’s clean record, role as a breadwinner, and remorseful cooperation.

Colonel David Opeero, Deputy Commander of the 5th Infantry Division, commended the community’s role in the investigation and reaffirmed the UPDF’s commitment to justice and accountability. He urged soldiers to resolve disputes through proper channels and to avoid conflict with civilians.
