n a series of coordinated operations, police and other security agencies have targeted criminal gangs across the country in a bid to curb rising crime as the festive season approaches. The operations aim to disrupt gang activities, which often involve drug use and attacks on pedestrians, homes, and businesses.

On November 29, 2024, police operations in Wakiso District targeted areas including Kireku Railway Zone, Bweyogerere Central Zone, Kakajo Zone, Kirinya Parish, and Mbalwa in Kira Municipality. These efforts led to the arrest of 38 suspects who were found in possession of marijuana and burglary tools.

In Mukono District, on November 28, 2024, raids were conducted in Kauga and Nantabulirwa areas within Goma Division. A total of 25 suspects were apprehended, and marijuana was recovered from key hotspots in these areas. Meanwhile, in Iganga Town, on the same day, operations focused on Kasolo and Bugabwe Trading Centres. Police detained 23 suspects and seized marijuana and housebreaking implements.

Bugiri District was also a target of operations on November 28, 2024. Security forces raided areas including Bugiri Municipality, Nkusi Ward, Katawo Cell, and Central Ward. This resulted in the arrest of 30 suspects. In addition to marijuana, jet fuel—commonly used by criminals for its psychoactive effects—was also confiscated.

On November 29, 2024, in Kampala City, police targeted specific bars and brothels in Katumba Zone and Kyanja Central Zone in Nakawa Division. These locations had drawn numerous community complaints. The operations led to the arrest of 40 individuals and the seizure of significant quantities of marijuana.

In Namayingo District, on November 30, 2024, police conducted raids in Kifuyo Trading Centre, Buyinja Sub-County. Five suspects were apprehended, and marijuana was recovered. Similarly, on December 1, 2024, a joint operation in Nansana Municipality, specifically in Katooke and Wamala Cells in Wamala Ward, Nabweru Division, targeted notorious “panga-wielding” robbers accused of snatching phones, bags, and attacking residents using motorcycles. Eight suspects were arrested, and three motorcycles and three mobile phones were recovered.

Police credited community reports for helping identify criminal hotspots, emphasizing the importance of public cooperation in ensuring safety. Many of the arrested individuals were found to be repeat offenders with existing criminal records at Lugoba and Nabweru police stations.

As the festive season approaches, police have pledged to remain vigilant to ensure the safety of all citizens. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity in their areas.
