Police are yet to establish the true identities of six suspects shot dead during a foiled robbery at Acacia Mall in Kololo, Kampala, on Monday.

According to Kampala Metropolitan spokesperson Patrick Onyango, the authorities only have the suspects’ nicknames, which is why their bodies remain at the City Mortuary.

He stated that proper identification is necessary to locate their respective families and hand over the bodies.

Onyango further revealed that police are searching for two suspects believed to be the ringleaders of the robbery gang.

He explained that the group has been involved in multiple robberies in Kampala Metropolitan areas, typically targeting individuals withdrawing large sums from banks, surrounding them, and robbing them.

Police reported that the gang uses machetes to threaten their victims before robbing them.

“Those who try to resist are always violently attacked,” Onyango said.

Meanwhile, police face mounting scrutiny after the controversial killing of the six suspected robbers, as many claim the suspects were unarmed.

However, Onyango defended the operation, stating that any object capable of killing someone is considered a weapon.
