Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana has been recharged with terrorism, along with four others—Mike Sserwadda, Jackson Kanyike, Bull Wamala, and John Mugerwa—following an amended charge sheet presented to the International Crimes Division (ICD) by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Jane Frances Abodo.

The revised charges, read in court by Justice Alice Komuhangi Khauka, no longer include the late MP Muhammad Ssegirinya. The allegations stem from the 2021 machete killings, known locally as bijambiya, which claimed over 30 lives and left many injured in Kampala, Rakai, and Masaka districts.

The prosecution claims Ssewanyana was involved in the killings of Kizza Mugerwa, Sulaiman Kakooza, and Tadeo Kiyimba, and the attempted murder of Ronald Sebyoto, all from Ssettaala village. He also faces an additional charge of aiding and abetting terrorism by allegedly funding the attacks.

While terrorism remains the main charge, the state seeks convictions for murder, attempted murder, and terrorism-related support if terrorism is not proven.

Justice Komuhangi has deferred pleas until evidence—such as crime scene photos, reports, and witness statements—is reviewed. A ruling on whether to commit the suspects to trial will be delivered on August 26, 2025.

Ssewanyana is currently on bail. His co-accused remain in remand at Luzira prison.
