Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Matia Kasaija, 81, has announced his intention to seek re-election as Member of Parliament for Buyanja County in Kibaale District, but says this will be his final term in politics.

Kasaija, one of Uganda’s longest-serving lawmakers and cabinet members, picked up nomination forms on Wednesday from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) electoral commission offices in Kampala, signaling his intention to contest for the party flag ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Speaking to journalists shortly after securing the nomination papers, the veteran politician addressed calls for him to step aside for younger leaders.

“I want only one term, and I will officially retire from politics,” Kasaija stated firmly.

He also expressed confidence in his chances, dismissing any serious challenge from his competitors.

“When I look at all my opponents, I don’t see anyone who can defeat me,” he said.

In a similar move, Second Deputy Prime Minister Gen. Moses Ali, 86, also picked up nomination forms. He is seeking another term to represent East Moyo County in Parliament. A veteran of Uganda’s political scene, Gen. Ali previously served as Finance Minister during Idi Amin’s regime and has been the area MP since 2011.

The NRM party primaries for all parliamentary aspirants are scheduled to take place on July 16, 2025.
