National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate James Pilli Leku has won the Adjumani West County parliamentary by-election.
Leku was declared the winner by Akao Eunice Christine, the Returning Officer for Adjumani Electoral District, after securing 12,423 valid votes.
His only challenger, independent candidate Gasper Draga, polled 2,559 votes.
The Electoral Commission recorded 14,982 valid votes. A total of 234 ballots were rejected, while 19 were classified as spoilt.
Leku therefore secured about 83 per cent of the valid votes, while Draga received about 17 per cent.
The by-election was held following the death of former Deputy Prime Minister and Adjumani West MP Moses Ali, who had represented the constituency for several years and was one of Uganda’s longest-serving politicians.
Four candidates had initially entered the race, but independent candidates Patrick Tandrupasi and Ben Anyama withdrew before polling day, leaving Leku and Draga to contest the seat.
