The Court of Appeal has upheld the 12-year and three-month prison sentence handed to Godfrey Wamala, also known as Troy, for the manslaughter of Ugandan music icon Moses Ssekibogo, famously known as Mowzey Radio.

A panel of justices — Christopher Gashirabake, Dr Asa Mugenyi, and John Mike Musisi — unanimously dismissed Wamala’s appeal, affirming that the trial court properly evaluated the evidence before convicting him.

Wamala had challenged both the conviction and sentence, arguing that there were inconsistencies in the prosecution’s case and claiming the punishment — originally 14 years but reduced due to time spent on remand — was excessively harsh. However, the appellate court ruled that the evidence presented was credible and compelling.

Mowzey Radio, a founding member of the Goodlyfe Crew, sustained fatal head injuries after Wamala slammed him to the ground during a bar fight at De Bar in Entebbe on January 22, 2018. He died a few days later at Case Clinic in Kampala.

In their judgment, the justices emphasised that the testimony of key prosecution witnesses — Pamela Musimire and David Otim a.k.a. Washington — was clear and consistent in identifying Wamala as the person responsible for the fatal assault.

With the appeal dismissed, Wamala will continue to serve the remainder of his sentence.
