As Uganda prepares to host the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) from 2 to 29 August, the Uganda Police has released a detailed traffic advisory to help motorists and residents navigate the expected surge in road activity.

The tournament, organised under the Confederation of African Football (CAF), will attract national football teams, CAF and FIFA officials, and thousands of fans from across Africa—bringing increased traffic, especially in and around Kampala, Entebbe, and match/training venues.

Here’s a breakdown of the key guidelines you should know:

Areas to Expect Heavy Traffic

According to Traffic Police Spokesperson Michael Kananura, congestion is expected along:

Kampala–Entebbe Expressway

Northern Bypass

Routes leading to Mandela National Stadium (Namboole)

Motorists are strongly advised to plan ahead and avoid peak hours, especially on match days.

Key Match and Training Venues

Main Match Venue:

Mandela National Stadium (Namboole)

Training Facilities:

Wankulukuku Stadium

KISU Grounds, Bukoto

FUFA Technical Centre, Kadiba-Mengo

Kyambogo University Grounds

Namboole Annex

These venues will frequently host teams, so expect increased activity in surrounding areas.

Team & Official Movements

Teams and officials will be shuttled from Entebbe International Airport to major hotels such as:

Speke Resort Munyonyo

Mestil Hotel

Kampala Serena Hotel

Skyz Hotel, Naguru

FUFA Hotel, Kisaasi

These movements will involve police motorcades, causing intermittent road closures and priority traffic along their routes.

Traffic Diversions & Restrictions

To minimise congestion, several diversions will be enforced, especially for heavy trucks:

Naalya: Trucks diverted to Kyaliwajjala–Ssonde

Seeta: Trucks rerouted to Namugongo

Kinawataka: No truck movement towards Kireka

Bweyogerere: Rerouting via Kinawataka Road (near Jokas Hotel)

Kireka Trading Centre: No vehicle entry from Hared Petrol Station

Kireka–Jokas stretch: Pedestrian-only zone

Parking & Venue Access

VIP Parking at Namboole will be reserved for accredited vehicles on the southern wing.

General Parking will be controlled by traffic police and may vary by match.

All vehicles entering match or training venues must display valid accreditation.

Safety & Enforcement

Heavy police deployment is expected along all official routes and venues.

Team convoys will be escorted, and unauthorised interference will not be tolerated.

Officers will be stationed at strategic points to guide traffic and ensure order.

Tips for the Public

Follow all police instructions

Expect delays and leave early for appointments

Avoid restricted areas unless authorised

Be respectful and patient, especially during motorcades or match traffic

Extend warm hospitality to visitors during the tournament

Uganda Ready to Host Africa

With major logistical preparations underway, authorities assure the public that Uganda is ready to deliver a successful CHAN tournament. Cooperation from all road users will be key to ensuring a safe and smooth experience for both residents and visitors.

Stay informed, plan ahead—and let’s show Africa the best of Ugandan hospitality!
