Uganda and Egypt have activated a visa waiver agreement that allows holders of diplomatic and service passports to travel between the two countries without a visa.
The development was announced on Monday at the Police Headquarters in Naguru by Simon Mundeyi, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Internal Affairs. He said the arrangement took effect after a series of bilateral engagements between the two governments.
Under the new arrangement, officials with diplomatic and service passports from both Uganda and Egypt can move between the two countries without applying for visas.
However, Mundeyi clarified that ordinary passport holders will still be required to obtain visas, meaning the majority of travellers are not yet covered by the waiver.
The announcement comes shortly after Uganda began implementing a similar visa waiver for diplomatic and service passport holders travelling to and from the United Arab Emirates.
Uganda and Egypt have long-standing relations built on cooperation in Nile water management, agriculture, trade, investment and regional security, with several agreements already in place to support joint development programmes.
