Ruhinda North Member of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has been endorsed once again to contest for the position of Deputy Speaker in the 12th Parliament.
This was announced by Chief of Defence Forces Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is also the chairperson of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU).
In a statement posted on X this morning, Muhoozi said the decision followed consultations with President Yoweri Museveni.
“On the issue of Deputy Speaker, after getting guidance from the Commander-in-Chief, all PLU MPs and PLU-leaning MPs will support Rt. Honourable Thomas Tayebwa for that position. Congratulations, Rt. Honourable,” Muhoozi wrote.
The endorsement comes amid an ongoing investigation into alleged corruption, abuse of office, and money laundering against outgoing Speaker Anita Among.
Jacob Oboth-Oboth has already been endorsed to replace Among.
Meanwhile, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission Chairperson, Tanga Odoi, said that they are still waiting for guidance from the party’s top organ, the Central Executive Committee (CEC), on whether members will stand and compete for the positions of Speaker of Parliament and Deputy Speaker.
Odoi said they have not yet asked members to pick up expression-of-interest forms, as the CEC is yet to offer guidance. He added that the CEC will give a final position on how the election will be conducted.
The 12th Parliament is expected to elect the Speaker and Deputy Speaker on May 25.
