The son of Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Director Maj. Tom Magambo has died after drowning during a swimming outing in the United States.

Timothy Magambo, 18, had just completed his first year at the University at Albany in New York. He reportedly drowned on Saturday, 16 May, while swimming with friends in Long Island waters.

According to police, Timothy had travelled with friends from Shelter Island to Wade’s Beach Shell Beach. The group of seven later decided to swim across a channel.

During the swim, Timothy became separated from the others. His friends later realised he was missing and immediately alerted authorities.

Police and rescue teams launched a search operation and later recovered his body about 100 yards from the area where he was last seen.

Reports indicate that Timothy had been living with his mother, who works at the United Nations in New York.

Authorities are continuing with investigations into the incident.
