Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oboth-Oboth has promised to lead the fight against corruption in Parliament, starting with his own office.
Speaking at a thanksgiving event hosted by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja at her home in Makerere-Kavule, Oboth said he has already written to the Clerk of Parliament.
He instructed him to slash the Speaker’s office budget from over Shs24 billion to about Shs4 billion.
“The first thing I have done is to reset the money that was in the Speaker’s office,” Oboth said. “About Shs24 billion is being taken back to the committees of Parliament starting this financial year.”
He said MPs must lead by example. “As members of parliament we must first be accountable before we demand accountability from others,” he added.
Oboth also questioned why the new Parliament building remains incomplete despite billions of shillings being allocated to it every year. He pledged to personally oversee its completion.
