The Ministry of Education and Sports has with immediate effect suspended all school educational trips across the country following the deadly bus crash in Kapchorwa District that killed 21 people.

The decision comes after a school bus carrying pupils from King David Junior School, Ndejje, crashed on Thursday night, claiming the lives of 20 pupils and the school’s founder and director, Tadeo Ssekade.

The directive was issued by the acting Minister of Education and Sports, John Chrysostom Muyingo, as government begins investigations into one of Uganda’s deadliest school transport accidents in recent years.

The ministry said the suspension will remain in force until investigations into the cause of the crash are completed and the safety of school travel is reviewed.

On Friday morning, police officers began enforcing the directive by stopping buses that were transporting pupils on planned educational trips in different parts of Kampala.

The suspension follows growing concern over the safety of learners travelling long distances for school tours after the bus, which was returning from a study trip to the Sipi Falls area, reportedly developed a mechanical fault before crashing in Kapchorwa District.
