Concern is growing over the health of veteran politician and retired military officer Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali, who remains hospitalised at Nakasero Hospital.
The 87-year-old former Second Deputy Prime Minister was admitted to the private hospital earlier this week and is still receiving treatment, according to sources familiar with his condition.
On Friday, several members of his family gathered at the hospital for a closed-door meeting. His son, Minister of State for Works Ali Siraj, was also seen at the facility. The exact nature of Gen. Ali’s illness has not been made public.
Gen. Ali, who was born on April 5, 1939, is one of Uganda’s longest-serving political and military figures, having been active in public life for more than five decades.
He served as a senior military commander and minister during the administration of former President Idi Amin before leading the Uganda National Rescue Front (UNRF) rebellion in the early 1980s.
In 1986, Gen. Ali reached a peace agreement with President Yoweri Museveni’s government, paving the way for the integration of his forces into the National Resistance Army. He was subsequently commissioned as a Major General.
He later held several senior government positions, including Minister of Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, Third Deputy Prime Minister, First Deputy Prime Minister, and Second Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Government Business in Parliament. He served in the latter two positions from 2021 until 2026.
Although he was not retained in Cabinet following the 2026 General Elections, Gen. Ali remains in Parliament as the Member of Parliament for Adjumani West Constituency.
