A police sniffer dog helped officers track down and arrest 11 suspects after a woman was allegedly robbed and raped during a violent attack in Kyengera Town Council, Wakiso District.

The incident occurred at around 4:00 a.m. on 28 July in Nakirama Cell, where an unidentified attacker is said to have broken into the victim’s shop before confronting her with a knife.

According to police, the assailant demanded money while threatening to seriously harm the woman if she failed to comply. After robbing her, the attacker allegedly raped her before fleeing the scene.

The victim later reported the attack to Kikajo Police Post, prompting detectives from the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), Scene of Crime Officers and the Police Canine Unit to launch an investigation.

After examining and documenting the crime scene, officers introduced police sniffer dog TP 297 Sofia into the victim’s bedroom, where the attack had taken place.

The canine picked up a scent trail and followed it for about one kilometre, leading investigators to a nearby bar.

Inside the bar, police found more than 10 people reportedly drinking. The sniffer dog carried out scent identification and singled out one individual by sitting next to the suspect, a signal used by trained police dogs to indicate a scent match.

The development prompted officers to arrest everyone who was at the bar for further investigation.

All 11 suspects were taken to Kikajo Police Post, where they remain in custody as police continue investigating the aggravated robbery and rape case. Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the suspects, and investigations are ongoing.
