Commuters travelling between Kampala, Namanve and Mukono now have more train options, with Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) adding new passenger trips to its timetable.
The changes take effect today, Monday, August 31, 2026, and are aimed at giving passengers more flexibility, particularly during the middle of the day and evening.
Here is what has changed.
The biggest addition to the timetable is a new lunchtime service from Kampala to Mukono.
The train will:
Leave Kampala at 1:30pm
Reach Namanve at 2:00pm
Arrive in Mukono at 2:30pm
Leave Mukono at 3:00pm for the return journey
This gives passengers who do not need to travel during the morning rush or the traditional evening period another option.
URC has also added another evening trip from Mukono towards Kampala. The new service will depart Mukono at 6:30pm, with another departure scheduled at 6:40pm, before arriving in Kampala at 7:40pm.
The additional trip is expected to give commuters more flexibility when returning home after work or other daytime activities.
The new trips have been added to the existing timetable rather than replacing the current services. The first morning train will continue to leave Mukono at 6:30am, stop at Namanve at 7:05am and reach Kampala at 7:40am.
Another morning service will depart Namanve at 8:15am and arrive in Kampala at 8:50am. For passengers travelling in the opposite direction later in the day, the existing evening service will continue to leave Kampala at 5:30pm.
There is also a later train departing Kampala at 7:50pm and arriving in Mukono at 8:50pm. This means commuters now have several train options spread across the morning, afternoon and evening.
URC has also announced a new passenger coach as part of the changes. The coach will have a seated-only arrangement, meaning passengers will not be allowed to stand during the journey. The move is expected to provide a more comfortable experience for passengers using the new coach.
The introduction of the additional trips does not change the standard commuter fare. Passengers using the ordinary coach will continue to pay Shs2,000 for the commuter service.
Those who prefer the executive coach will pay:
Shs5,000 for Kampala–Mukono
Shs4,000 for Kampala–Namanve
The Kampala–Namanve–Mukono railway corridor serves several stops along the way.
From Kampala, trains pass through areas including Nakawa (MUBS), Spedag (Zone 4), Kireka and Namboole before reaching Namanve and eventually Mukono.
The additional services are part of URC’s efforts to expand passenger rail transport in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area, where demand for affordable and reliable commuter transport continues to grow.
