Former military intelligence chief Maj Gen James Mugabe Birungi has been further remanded after a proposed surety failed to appear in court to support his bail application.
The General Court Martial, sitting at Makindye and chaired by Brig Gen Richard Tukachungurwa, on Monday ordered Birungi to remain in custody at the Makindye Military Police Barracks until Thursday, 24 September.
The court is expected to resume hearing his bail application on that day.
Birungi, a former commander of the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), is facing charges of treachery and offences relating to security.
He denies the charges and remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of law.
His prosecution followed his arrest in August 2025 over allegations that fabricated intelligence reports were used to obtain operational funds.
The allegations reportedly involved purported terrorist threats, but they have not been proven in court.
Birungi has previously faced delays in his bail application after his proposed sureties failed to appear. In July, he was also remanded after his sureties did not turn up in court.
Before his arrest, Birungi held several senior positions in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), including commander of military intelligence and commander of the Mountain Division.
