Righteous Ariho Besigye, the only grandson of opposition politician Dr Kizza Besigye, has died at the age of six while receiving treatment at Mulago Hospital.
Ariho, died in the early hours of Thursday while in the intensive care unit, his father, Adam Ampa Besigye, announced.
Adam said Ariho was his firstborn son. He was born in March 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a social media post announcing his death, Adam described Ariho as the “greatest gift” of his life and said he was struggling to come to terms with the loss.
“It’s with profound pain and a heavy heart I’ve never imagined I would ever carry, that I announce the loss of my beloved and only firstborn son,” Adam wrote.
He said Ariho, the only grandson of Dr Besigye, died at the ICU of Mulago Hospital in the early hours of Thursday.
Adam did not disclose the illness Ariho was being treated for or how long he had been admitted to hospital.
Paying tribute to his son, Adam recalled becoming a father during the COVID-19 pandemic and described Ariho’s birth as a special moment for the family.
“You fought until the end, my warrior,” he wrote.
“Daddy loves you always Rai. Until we meet again.”
Ariho’s death comes as his grandfather, Dr Kizza Besigye, remains in custody while facing a treason case.
