Three people have died in a house fire in Nansana Municipality after the landlady allegedly locked herself inside the building and set it ablaze over financial difficulties.
The fire broke out at about 2:00 a.m. on 28 September at a house that had been partitioned into six rental units.
Police said the landlady, identified as Violet Nanyombi, allegedly locked herself inside one of the units with two tenants, Annet Namulondo and her husband, Isabirye Bumali, before setting the house on fire.
All three died in the fire, while six other people survived.
According to local residents, Nanyombi allegedly left behind a will and a suicide note, which she gave to her nine-year-old daughter before the incident.
In the note, she reportedly said she had decided to take her own life because of stress linked to a bank loan and delays by her tenants in paying rent. She allegedly said the unpaid rent had made it difficult for her to repay the loan.
Nanyombi also reportedly stated that her daughter would inherit the rental properties.
Kampala Metropolitan Police North Regional Police Commander Moses Nanoka said police recovered three bodies from the burnt building, but they had been burnt beyond recognition.
Nanoka said investigations into the incident are ongoing.
