TOKYO OLYMPICS: Ugandan athletes who are still in medal contention

After winning two medals last Friday in the men’s 10,000m, thanks to Joshua Cheptegei for the silver and Jacob Kiplimo for the bronze, more Ugandan athletes are still in pursuit for Olympic medals.

Yesterday Peruth Chemutai reached the women’s 3000m steeplechase final that is slated for Wednesday August 4 at 2pm (EAT). She finished second in Heat 1. She qualified automatically with a season best time of 9:12.72.

Similarly, today morning Winnie Nanyondo stormed the semifinals of the women’s 1500m race at the Olympics in Tokyo. The 27-year-old finished second after posting 4:02:24 behind defending champion Faith Kipyegon from Kenya who crossed the line in 4:01:40. She will compete for the final spot on Wednesday at 1:25pm (EAT).

Tomorrow more Ugandans who are yet to grace the Olympic track will be in action with Ronald Musagala competing in the men’s 1500m heats and Shida Leni in the Women’s 400m heats.

On Wednesday, Cheptegei and Kiplimo will be back in action for the men’s 5000m race. The duo will be joined by Oscar Chelimo.

On Saturday August 7, Juliet Chekwel    and Immaculate Chemutai will take part in the women’s marathon. And on the day Mercyline Chelangat will compete in the 10000m.

On the last day of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, 2012 gold winner Stephen, Fred Musobo and Filex Chemonges will compete in the men’s marathon.
