The National Council of Sports (NCS) has requested Shs379 billion to facilitate Uganda’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which the country will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania.

Additionally, the council is seeking Shs5.3 billion to support the Uganda Cranes’ preparations for crucial international tournaments.

This funding request was disclosed by James Kubeketerya, Chairperson of Parliament’s Education and Sports Committee, during the presentation of the committee’s report on the 2025/26 Budget Framework Paper to the Budget Committee.

In addition to the AFCON budget, the Education and Sports Committee has urged the Ministry of Finance to allocate Shs26 billion for the renovation and upgrading of national stadiums, Shs3.5 billion to operationalize the National Anti-Doping Organization and enhance sports integrity, Shs10 billion to recognize and reward outstanding Ugandan athletes while revamping the Kitante Golf Course to meet international standards, and Shs39 billion (to be released in phases) for the completion of the Phillip Omondi Stadium, a key sports infrastructure project.
